Distract me if you can π§ (me π social media)
Social media π have changed human π¨βπ¦βπ¦ interactions and enabled the creation of endless entertaining/distracting π§ content every day. I remember that I used to use social media apps π€³ without feeling the need to impose any restriction β, but after countless scrolling π΅ on Facebook, Twitterβ¦ feed and getting lost in some YouTube βrabbit π holesβ, I started to set up few restriction rules π« in my usage, and thatβs what I want to share with you in this article π° π
Without further ado, let the battles begin π₯
Me vs Facebook π
No Facebook app on my phone π± π« (except the Facebook Messenger App)
I only check my Facebook feed from my PC π» about ~ once a week and in order to avoid seeing π the feed every time I log in to FB on my PC, I use the News Feed Eradicator extension π§©
So by default, when I go to Facebook, I see a nice random citation π instead of the feed π
If I want to see the news feed, I have to click π±οΈ on the extension icon then choose for how much time β±οΈ I allow myself to scroll the infinite feed π
By not having the Facebook App on my phone π±, Iβm less tempted to check the feed every time Iβm bored π
Me vs YouTube πΊ
No YouTube App on my phone π± π« (installed by default on my Android, so I disabled it)
I access YouTube on my phone π± only through the browser, I personally use the Brave mobile browser that manages to block π all YouTube Ads π, sorry Google π . It also offers this great feature βthe ability to keep playing a YouTube video in the backgroundβ, so sometimes I just listen π§ to some interesting YT videos as podcasts π
On my desktop π» browser, I use the following Chrome extension Unhook β Remove YouTube Recommended Videos, which manages to remove β all the distracting YT recommendations, I also use a YT ad blocker extension to avoid β the disturbing ads that popups at the beginning of each video (again sorry Google π)
Yeah, so when I go to YouTube on my PC, I see this gray emptiness (Ah, what a relief !π§ββοΈ)
And when I search π for a video πΌ I see a clean frame without any other recommendations and of course no ads β
Me vs Twitter π¦
No Twitter App on my phone π± π«
Same as Facebook I only check the Twitter feed from my desktop π» and by default, it is blocked π by the same News Feed Eradicator extension π§©
In fact, I rarely use Twitter nowadays, In the past, I have been using it during big events π or when there is breaking news π° to see what people are talking π£οΈ about,
Another practical π use case of Twitter for me is to request support π€, when I have issues π© with services that I use
Me vs LinkedIn πΌ
No LinkedIn App on my phone π± π«
I check LinkedIn only on my PC π» (during working days), Like Facebook, I also use the News Feed Eradicator Chrome extension to block π the feed by default.
I also enabled β the private mode π΅οΈ on LinkedIn, so when I visit a profile, he/she does not get notified, and I donβt get notified or know who visited my profile (donβt care anyway π)
I disabled β the reaction π notifications π so I donβt get notified when someone reacts to my posts π, you can do this by clicking on the ββ¦β next to a like notification and click disable this kind of notifications π
LinkedIn is the social media on which Iβm the most active, I publish a post π almost every week in order to have some influence π, but to keep the pace π¨ I use the buffer website with which I can plan π few posts ahead.
Me vs Instagram πΌοΈ
I have Instagram on my phone π± β
- All notifications are disabled π
- Like counter is hidden ππ«
Iβm not really an addict π of this media, I have created my personal π€ account recently, on which I post some Reels videos πΌ that I edit.
Here is one of my average weekly activity on the app π
Me vs Snapchat & TikTok π
No Snapchat & TikTok App on my phone π± π«
I have already tried Snapchat π» , I wanted to test the AR Filters and effects, and to understand the app that my teenage nephew is using π. I uninstalled it, but I use the desktop Snap Camera App πΉ on my PC, which offers all the snap filters that can be applied during a meeting π (Teams, G meet, Zoomβ¦)
Here Iβm in a Teams meeting with the snap Cartoon 3D style filter π
Regarding TikTok, Yeah I admitted it π, I once had the app on my phone π (for some weeks), I wanted to try the app and understand how it got popular π so fast. After testing it, I can confirm that if you have nothing to do with your life, TikTok can be very addictive π
Joke aside π, I still use TikTok sometimes but only through the browser (yes you can access tiktok.com itβs similar to the app) to get some creativity boost π, thanks to TikTok I rediscover my video πΉ editing βοΈ hobby that I use to do on desktop π» long time ago, now I do all the editing on my phone π± using CapCut (app from the same company that made TikTok)
Yeah, that is all I have to share about my battle π₯ with social media π, I know all these rules I described may seem drastic π±, but good luck π€ managing your social media time without any rule π
